Ponte Hercílio Luz: Florianópolis's Iconic Landmark

Ponte Hercílio Luz, an iconic symbol of Florianópolis, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural prowess. Inaugurated in 1926, the bridge was commissioned by Governor Hercílio Luz to connect Santa Catarina Island with mainland Brazil, a feat that would solidify Florianópolis's position as the state capital. Before its construction, the island's 40,000 residents relied on ferries for transportation.The bridge stretches over 800 meters, making it the longest suspension bridge in Brazil. Its central span, once considered quite long for its time, measures approximately 340 meters. The bridge's design, executed by the Robinson & Steinman firm and built by the American Bridge Company, features a unique overhead truss system supporting the roadway.After being closed to traffic in 1982 due to safety concerns, the Ponte Hercílio Luz underwent extensive restoration. It fully reopened in December 2019, allowing pedestrian traffic, public transport, and emergency services to cross. Today, visitors can stroll across the bridge, taking in panoramic views of the city, the bay, and the surrounding landscape. At night, the bridge is illuminated by hundreds of lights, creating a captivating spectacle.The area surrounding the bridge offers additional attractions, including the Parque da Luz, Praça Hercílio Luz, and Forte Santana, providing various vantage points for photographs and leisurely exploration.
