Discover more about Museu do Ceará

The Museu do Ceará, established in 1932, stands as the first official museum institution in the State of Ceará. Originally named the Museu Histórico do Ceará, it officially opened to the public in January 1933. The museum is located in Fortaleza in the Palacete Senador Alencar, a building of significant historical value that was originally designed to be the Provincial Assembly of Ceará during the Brazilian Empire. Its collections originated from the first museum in Ceará, belonging to physician Joaquim Antônio Alves, who organized a collection of objects and fragments of nature in 1873. The museum's diverse collection of over 13,000 pieces is distributed across three important collections that narrate the history of Ceará: Paleontology, Archeology/Indigenous Anthropology, and Furniture. Among the items, visitors can find coins, medals, paintings, furniture, archaeological pieces, indigenous artifacts, flags, and weapons. There are also pieces of "popular art" and a collection of cordel literature published between 1940 and 2000. The museum hosts permanent thematic exhibitions on topics such as constituted powers, popular revolts, religiosity, intellectual production, and the irreverence of the people of Ceará. The Palacete Senador Alencar, where the museum is located, is itself a museum piece. Construction began in 1856 and was completed in 1871. The building still maintains its original architectural features. Its neoclassical style is expressed mainly through the columns, windows, and triangular frontispiece. The building was declared a National Monument by IPHAN (National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute) on February 28, 1973.
