Discover more about La Casa de Botellas

La Casa de Botellas, located in the Barrio Orquídeas of Puerto Iguazú, Misiones, Argentina, is a testament to sustainable living and creative recycling. Built by Alfredo Santa Cruz and his family, the house is constructed from over 1,200 plastic bottles used for the walls, 1,300 tetra pack cartons for the roof, 140 CD cases for the doors and windows, and numerous bottles for the furniture. The project began out of economic necessity during Argentina's financial crisis in the early 2000s. Alfredo Santa Cruz, an electrician, sought a solution to provide for his family by collecting recyclable materials. This initiative evolved into an inspiring example of how discarded materials can be transformed into a functional and beautiful home. Declared as a site of 'municipal interest' by the City Council of Puerto Iguazú, La Casa de Botellas serves as a museum and educational center. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the construction techniques and the importance of environmental conservation. The funds raised support the family's efforts to travel and teach others in Latin America how to build similar bottle houses. The house stands as a symbol of ecological awareness, demonstrating how recycling can provide low-cost housing while benefiting the planet.
