    Discover more about Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls is more than just a waterfall; it's an experience that immerses you in the raw power and stunning beauty of nature. Situated on the Iguazu River, bordering Argentina and Brazil, this colossal system comprises approximately 275 individual waterfalls, spread across nearly two miles. The name 'Iguazu' originates from the Guarani words 'y' (water) and 'ûasú' (big). The falls were formed by the erosion of the Iguazu River over millions of years. The river flows over a plateau of basalt rock, gradually eroding the softer sandstone beneath, creating the dramatic cliffs and cascades. The most famous of these is the Devil's Throat, a U-shaped chasm that plunges 82 meters (269 feet). The surrounding national parks, established in Argentina (1934) and Brazil (1939), protect a vast subtropical forest teeming with diverse flora and fauna. These parks were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1984 and 1986, respectively.According to local legend, a deity, intending to marry a beautiful woman named Naipí, was enraged when she fled with her mortal lover, Tarobá. In his fury, the deity sliced the river, creating the falls and condemning the lovers to an eternal plunge.Today, visitors can explore the falls through a network of trails, walkways, and boat tours. The Argentine side offers a more immersive experience, with trails leading to the top of the falls. The Brazilian side provides panoramic views of the entire system.
