Discover more about Buriti Square

Praça do Buriti is located in the heart of Brasília and stands as a testament to the city's modernist vision. Inaugurated on August 25, 1969, the square was designed by Nauro Esteves, influenced by Lúcio Costa's Plano Piloto, which aimed to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing city. Spanning over 47,000 square meters, Praça do Buriti features two water mirrors, twelve concrete benches, and 14,000 square meters of gardens. The square's name comes from the Buriti palm tree, a symbol of the city, which was planted during Brasília's construction. The original Buriti palm died ten years earlier, and the current one was planted in 1969. In 1992, an attempt to cut down the palm led the government to protect it with a metal shield and steel cables. Praça do Buriti is strategically located on the Monumental Axis, surrounded by key governmental buildings such as the Palácio do Buriti and the Tribunal de Justiça do Distrito Federal e dos Territórios. Nearby attractions include the JK Memorial and the Esplanada dos Ministérios. The square is open 24/7 and is accessible to all visitors, with well-paved pathways and ramps.
