Discover more about Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida

The Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida, dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil, stands as a powerful symbol of both faith and architectural innovation in Brasília. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, the cathedral is one of the capital's most expressive landmarks. Its foundation stone was laid on September 12, 1958, and the structure was completed in 1970. Niemeyer, despite being a professed atheist, created a space that evokes religious emotion through its spectacular yet simple design. The cathedral's most striking feature is its hyperboloid structure, composed of 16 curved concrete columns that reach towards the sky like hands in prayer. These columns, weighing 90 tons each, create a circular space 70 meters in diameter. The interior is bathed in light filtering through the stained-glass windows designed by Marianne Peretti, adding to the ethereal atmosphere. Visitors enter through a dark tunnel, a design choice intended to heighten the impact of the light-filled interior. Inside, sculptures of angels suspended from the ceiling and artwork by Alfredo Ceschiatti and Athos Bulcão further enhance the spiritual ambiance. The cathedral can accommodate up to 4,000 people and continues to be a central place of worship and a cultural landmark in Brasília.
