Discover more about Memorial Chico Science

The Memorial Chico Science is located in the São José neighborhood of Recife, in the Pátio de São Pedro. It is not just a museum, but a space where visitors can interact with elements that were fundamental to the emergence of the Manguebeat movement and Chico Science as an artist. The memorial consists of three rooms that tell the story of Chico Science, considered one of the most genuine talents of Brazilian culture. Visitors can explore Chico's diverse influences, including funk icon James Brown, the melancholic singer Nick Drake, and Mestre Salustiano, an important figure in regional maracatu music. The memorial also features a video library compiling almost all audiovisual material made with Chico during his lifetime, including clips, reports, and concert footage. Chico Science, along with Fred 04 of Mundo Livre S/A, founded the Manguebeat movement around 1991 in response to economic and cultural stagnation in Recife and Olinda. Manguebeat blended traditional northeastern rhythms with punk, rock, funk, and hip hop. Chico's lyrics often addressed social and political issues faced by the people of Pernambuco. His music was original and distinctive of his region. The movement's focus on the mangrove swamps, home to some of Recife's poorest communities, brought attention to their struggles and challenges. Chico Science's untimely death in a car accident in 1997 was a blow to the Manguebeat movement. However, his legacy lives on, inspiring new generations of musicians. The Memorial Chico Science serves as a reminder of his contributions to Brazilian music and culture.
