Discover more about Farol do Recife

The Farol do Recife, also known as the Recife Lighthouse, is more than just a navigational aid; it's a symbol of Recife's rich maritime history and a testament to its strategic importance as a port city. Erected in 1822, the lighthouse stands on the site of the former Forte de São Francisco da Barra, a 16th-century Portuguese fort built to protect the harbor from foreign invasions. Over the centuries, the fort was destroyed and rebuilt, serving various purposes under Portuguese and Dutch rule. In 1817, King D. João VI decided to rebuild the fort and turn it into a lighthouse. The Farol do Recife was inaugurated on February 1, 1822. The original structure was equipped with a state-of-the-art catoptric rotating light, manufactured in England. It underwent several upgrades, including a new lantern in 1894 and electrification in 1986. Though the lighthouse itself may not be open for interior tours, the surrounding area offers a captivating experience. Visitors can stroll along the promenade, soak in panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, and explore local artisan markets. The lighthouse is also a great spot for people-watching and enjoying the natural beauty of the coastline.
