Discover more about Farol do Recife

The Farol do Recife, also known as the Recife Lighthouse, is more than just a navigational aid; it's a symbol of Recife's history and resilience. Inaugurated on February 1, 1822, the lighthouse stands on the site of the former Fort of São Francisco da Barra, constructed around 1590 to protect the harbor. The fort was also known as Castelo do Mar or Forte Laje do Picão. During the Dutch occupation (1630-1654), the fort was used to signal approaching ships. After the Dutch were expelled, the Portuguese continued its use. The original fort was wrecked in 1817, leading King D. João VI to rebuild it as a lighthouse. The lighthouse was shut down in 1931, then reactivated in 1932 with an automatic lantern. In 1938, it was moved to the Capitania dos Portos building, before returning to the fort in 1945, where it remains to this day. Visitors can stroll along the promenade surrounding the lighthouse, enjoying panoramic ocean views and the lively atmosphere. Local artisans often display their crafts, offering a taste of Pernambuco's vibrant culture. Although the lighthouse interior is not open for tours, the external views and historical significance make it a worthwhile visit. The lighthouse is featured on the Coat of Arms of the State of Pernambuco.
