Fazenda Colubandê, nestled in the Columba neighborhood of São Gonçalo, offers a glimpse into Brazil's colonial past. This historical landmark features the grand house from the 18th century and the Chapel of Sant'Ana, which dates back to 1618. The site was designated as a national heritage site in 1940.Originally known as Engenho de Montserrat, the estate was founded in the 17th century by Catarina Siqueira. Later, it was sold to Ramirez Duarte Leão, a New Christian (a term for converted Jews), and became one of the region's largest producers of sugarcane. The name Colubandê is associated with the presence of Jewish families in the area, possibly as a tribute to the Golan Heights.The architecture reflects the grandeur of the colonial era, with thick walls and a design built around a central water well. The Chapel of Sant'Ana features Portuguese tile panels depicting Saint Anne teaching the Virgin Mary and the betrothal of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne.Despite its historical and architectural significance, Fazenda Colubandê has suffered from neglect and vandalism. Efforts are underway to restore and revitalize the estate, recognizing its potential as a cultural and tourist attraction.
