Horto do Fonseca: Niterói's Urban Oasis

Horto do Fonseca, also known as the Niterói Botanical Garden, is a cherished green space located in the Fonseca neighborhood of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Established in 1906, the park has evolved from its initial purpose of cultivating and distributing seeds to farmers into a recreational and ecological haven for locals and tourists alike. Spanning approximately 8,000 square meters, Horto do Fonseca provides a diverse range of activities and attractions. Visitors can explore walking paths, utilize fitness areas, and enjoy playgrounds. The park features a skate park, areas for walking and skating, a playground, a community space, kiosks, restrooms, bike racks, a renovated bandstand, and two gyms. The park is home to diverse plant species, including jatobás, jequitibás, jacarandás and sapucaias. Throughout its history, Horto do Fonseca has undergone several transformations. During World War I, the park was part of an industrial expansion program focused on producing fabrics and sweets. It also played a role in early experiments with alcohol as fuel for engines. Although it once housed a zoo, it was closed in 2010. Today, Horto do Fonseca is a popular gathering place, offering a blend of natural beauty, recreational facilities, and community engagement. It's a place where visitors can relax, exercise, and connect with nature.
