Itaipu Beach: A Tranquil Oceanic Escape

Itaipu Beach, located in the Oceanic Region of Niterói, presents a unique blend of tranquility and historical significance. Unlike the bay beaches of Niterói, Itaipu faces the open ocean, though its waters remain peaceful. The beach stretches for approximately 1,000 meters and marks one of the oldest parts of the city. Historically, Itaipu was a significant agricultural provider for Rio de Janeiro. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this era, including the Church of São Sebastião de Itaipu, dating back to the early 18th century, and the Museu Arqueológico de Itaipu, housed in the former Convent of Santa Teresa. The name Itaipu comes from the Tupi language, meaning “water that comes out of the rocks”.
