Public Transport

From the Rio de Janeiro city center, take a ferry from Praça Arariboia to Niterói. From the ferry terminal, several bus lines (17, 32, 33, 43, 46, 47, 47B, 49, 53, 60) will take you to Praia de Icaraí. The municipal transport fare in Niterói is approximately R$4.45.

From anywhere in Niterói, taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and 99 are readily available. A short trip from the ferry terminal or the city center to Praia de Icaraí will typically cost between R$15-R$30, depending on traffic and the specific location.

Driving

If driving from Rio de Janeiro, cross the Rio-Niterói Bridge (BR-101). Tolls apply, typically around R$6.50. Once in Niterói, follow the signs to Icaraí. Parking is available near the beach, but it can be limited, especially during peak hours. Paid parking lots are also available in the area. Expect to pay approximately R$5-R$10 per hour for parking.

Praia de Icaraí, situated in the Guanabara Bay, is a 1.2-kilometer stretch of sand in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, known as the 'Smile City'. The name 'Icaraí' means 'holy water, holy river, or salty river' in the Tupi language. The beach is framed by almond and coconut trees, providing shade along the sidewalk, inviting visitors for sports, walks, and admiring the scenery.Icaraí's history is intertwined with Niterói's development. In the early 20th century, urbanization projects included paving Avenida da Praia de Icaraí. The beach provides views of the Índio and Itapuca rocks, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (MAC), and Rio de Janeiro's Corcovado and Sugar Loaf Mountain. Locals joke that the best part of Icaraí is the view of Rio.The beach hosts city events and has amenities such as a children's play area, parking, kiosks, snack bars, and restaurants. Praia de Icaraí is also becoming more accessible, with projects aimed at providing access to the sea for people with disabilities through ramps and amphibious chairs.
