Praça Nossa Senhora da Paz: Ipanema's Green Heart

Praça Nossa Senhora da Paz, or Our Lady of Peace Square, is a beloved public space in the heart of Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro. Originally part of the urban development project led by the Baron of Ipanema in the late 19th century, the square was first named Praça Coronel Henrique Valadares. The square was redesigned in the 1950s by urban planner Carlos Perry and further enhanced in 1989 with a sculpture by Lúcia Guerreiro depicting children playing in a circle around a pond. The square features a prominent bronze monument to Pinheiro Machado, inaugurated in 1931, honoring the influential Brazilian politician. Every Friday, the square hosts a traditional open-air market, offering a variety of goods. The square also provides access to the Nossa Senhora da Paz metro station, making it easily accessible. The area surrounding the square is known for its numerous commercial establishments, bars, and restaurants, making it a popular meeting point for locals and tourists. The square is located in front of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Paz, the most important church in the Ipanema neighborhood. The square is a hub of activity, hosting events, markets, and cultural activities throughout the year.
