Largo do Boticário, or Apothecary's Square, is a hidden treasure in Rio de Janeiro's Cosme Velho neighborhood, less than 2 kilometers from Christ the Redeemer. Its name originates from Joaquim Luís da Silva Souto, a successful pharmacist ('boticário' in Portuguese) who relocated his business here in 1831 and even served the Brazilian royal family.While the square's history dates back to the 19th century, its defining architectural features emerged in the 1920s when Edmundo Bittencourt, owner of the Correio da Manhã newspaper, acquired the property. He transformed the area by constructing a series of neocolonial houses, some using salvaged materials from demolished colonial-era buildings. Diplomat, architect, and art collector Rodolfo da Siqueira also contributed to this trend.During its golden age, Largo do Boticário became a social hub, attracting artists, writers, and intellectuals. The brightly painted houses and lush greenery create a picturesque scene, offering a glimpse into Rio's lesser-known facets. Legend has it that Walt Disney was inspired to create the character of Jiminy Cricket during a visit to the square. The Carioca River, mostly underground, is visible in a few spots throughout Rio, including Largo do Boticário.After a period of decline in the late 20th century, the square was restored in 2018 when the French hospitality company Accor opened the JO&JOE hotel and restaurant. Today, Largo do Boticário stands as a testament to Rio de Janeiro's rich cultural heritage, offering visitors a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty.
