Avenida Rio Branco, formerly Avenida Central, is a vital artery in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated in 1905, it stands as a symbol of the city's ambitious architectural reforms led by Mayor Francisco Pereira Passos. The avenue stretches approximately 1.8 kilometers (just over a mile) from the Glória neighborhood in the south to Saúde in the north. In the early 1900s, the construction of Avenida Central involved the demolition of nearly 600 buildings, displacing thousands. In 1912, it was renamed Avenida Rio Branco in honor of the Baron of Rio Branco, a diplomat who played a key role in resolving Brazil's border disputes. For a time, it was considered more important than the beach, with people dressing up to see and be seen.Today, Avenida Rio Branco remains a significant commercial and financial hub, home to major banks and government offices. While many original buildings have been replaced by modern structures, landmarks like the Theatro Municipal and Cinelândia Square still showcase the avenue's rich history. The avenue is frequented by over 500,000 people daily and is a prominent location for events like Carnival.
