Igreja da Venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco da Penitência: A Gilded Baroque Masterpiece

The Igreja da Venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco da Penitência, located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, is a testament to the city's rich colonial past and the opulence of Brazilian Baroque. Founded in 1619, the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis of Penance initially met in a chapel within the Santo Antônio Convent. By 1657, they began constructing their own church, a project that extended over decades due to disagreements and financial constraints, finally being completed in 1773.Despite its unassuming exterior, the church's interior is a breathtaking display of gilded woodwork and elaborate carvings. The walls, altars, and ceilings are covered in intricate designs crafted from cedar and gold leaf, showcasing the skill of 17th- and 18th-century artisans. The church's design incorporates a single rectangular nave, symmetrically arranged walls, six lateral altars, and two pulpits. Highlights include the marble-inlaid floor of the main altar and the paintings on the side panels.
