Palácio Guanabara: A Seat of Power and History

Palácio Guanabara, situated in the Laranjeiras neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, is a significant landmark that has served various roles throughout Brazil's history. Constructed in 1853 in a Neoclassical style, it was initially a private residence until the Brazilian Imperial Family purchased it in 1864. The palace then underwent renovations by architect José Maria Jacinto Rebelo and became the residence of Princess Isabel and the Count of Eu, known as Paço Isabel.After the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889, the palace was taken over by the republican government and renamed Palácio Guanabara. Over the years, it served as the official residence for several Brazilian presidents, including Getúlio Vargas during the Estado Novo era. The palace also withstood an attack by members of the Brazilian Integralist Action in 1938. In 1908, architect Francisco Marcelino de Souza Aguiar renovated the palace, giving it an eclectic architectural style.
