Sé Metropolitan Cathedral: A Neo-Gothic Marvel

The Sé Metropolitan Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, is an iconic symbol of São Paulo. Its history is intertwined with the city's own, with the original church on the site dating back to 1591. As São Paulo grew, so did the need for a grander place of worship. By the late 19th century, the old baroque cathedral was deemed inadequate for the burgeoning metropolis. The decision was made in 1912 to demolish the existing structure and erect a new cathedral in the neo-Gothic style, a popular architectural trend in Europe at the time. Designed by German architect Maximilian Emil Hehl, construction commenced in 1913 but faced interruptions due to World War I and subsequent economic challenges. The main structure was completed in 1954, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of São Paulo's founding, while the towers were finished in 1967. Today, Catedral da Sé stands as one of the largest neo-Gothic cathedrals globally, measuring 111 meters in length and 46 meters in width. The twin towers soar to a height of 92 meters, making them a prominent feature of São Paulo's skyline. The interior features beautiful stained-glass windows, marble columns, and a richly decorated altar. Visitors can explore the crypt, which houses the tombs of notable figures in Brazilian history. The cathedral also boasts a large Italian organ, the largest in Latin America, with over 10,000 pipes. The surrounding Praça da Sé is a vibrant hub, bustling with vendors and street performers, offering a taste of São Paulo's lively atmosphere.
