Discover more about Pedra da Mina

Pedra da Mina, meaning 'Water Spring Rock,' is the fourth highest mountain in Brazil, reaching an elevation of 2,798 meters (9,180 feet). It's located in the Serra Fina section of the Mantiqueira Mountains, a vital mountain range for Brazil's water supply. The mountain sits on the border between Minas Gerais and São Paulo, making it the highest point in the Mantiqueira Mountains and São Paulo state, and the second highest in Minas Gerais. Composed of easily eroded nepheline syenite, Pedra da Mina is believed to be the highest mountain of this rock type in the Americas. The name comes from the four creeks that originate near its peak. Despite its height and proximity to populated areas, Pedra da Mina remained relatively unknown until the 21st century, when its exact elevation was acknowledged, and it became a popular ecotourism destination. The first documented ascent was in 1955 by a group of German immigrants and local Brazilians. Today, hikers can choose from several routes, with the most common being a strenuous one-day hike from the north side (Minas Gerais). This route begins near Passa Quatro, ascending through diverse flora and rocky landscapes to breathtaking views.
