Getting There

    From Engenheiro Passos, take BR-354 to Garganta do Registro, then Rodovia das Flores to Posto Marcão, the entrance to the upper part of Itatiaia National Park. From there, follow the well-marked trails to Pico das Prateleiras. Parking is available at Posto Marcão. Note that the road to Posto Marcão includes 14km of unpaved road, so a vehicle with higher clearance is recommended. There is a parking fee, check the latest pricing at the park entrance.

  • Public Transport

    Take a bus from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo to Itatiaia. From Itatiaia, buses or taxis can take you to the lower part of the park. For the upper part, which provides access to Pico das Prateleiras, take a bus to Engenheiro Passos. From Engenheiro Passos, local transport options to the park entrance (Posto Marcão) are limited, consider a taxi or ride-share. Bus fares from Rio or São Paulo to Itatiaia/Engenheiro Passos can range from R$50-R$150. A taxi from Engenheiro Passos to Posto Marcão will cost approximately R$50-R$80.
