Curitiba's Botanical Garden: A French-Inspired Oasis

The Jardim Botânico de Curitiba, officially named Jardim Botânico Fanchette Rischbieter, is a captivating urban park in Curitiba, Brazil, that provides a serene retreat for both locals and tourists. Opened in 1991, the garden's design draws inspiration from French formal gardens of the 17th and 18th centuries, creating a landscape of geometric flowerbeds, fountains, waterfalls, and lakes. Upon entering the 240,000 square meter park, visitors are greeted by the iconic Art Nouveau-style greenhouse. This metallic and glass structure, reminiscent of London's Crystal Palace, houses a diverse collection of tropical and subtropical plants. The surrounding French-style gardens feature meticulously arranged flowerbeds that, when viewed from above, mirror the design of Curitiba's flag. Beyond the greenhouse, the Botanical Garden offers various attractions, including the Museu Botânico de Curitiba, home to Brazil's fourth-largest herbarium. The Garden of Sensations engages visitors' senses of smell and touch through direct contact with various plant species. The Frans Krajcberg Cultural Space displays sculptures and artwork by the Polish-Brazilian artist, crafted from the remains of burned or illegally cut trees, promoting environmental awareness.
