Discover more about Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is an iconic Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It stands at the summit of Corcovado Mountain, 700 metres (2,300 ft) high, in the Tijuca National Park. The statue is 30 metres (98 ft) tall, with an 8-metre (26 ft) pedestal, and its arms stretch 28 metres (92 ft) wide. Constructed of reinforced concrete and soapstone between 1922 and 1931, it has become a cultural icon of both Rio and Brazil. The statue's origins trace back to the 1850s when a Vincentian priest, Pedro Maria Boss, first suggested a Christian monument on Corcovado Mountain. However, the idea was dismissed when Brazil became a republic in 1889, separating church and state. In 1920, the Catholic Circle of Rio proposed a landmark statue on the mountain, motivated by a perceived decline in religious faith. Donations, largely from Brazilian Catholics, funded the construction. The statue was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski. Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida sculpted the face. The initial design, featuring Christ holding a globe and a cross, evolved into the current Art Deco style with open arms, symbolizing peace and welcome. Visitors can reach Christ the Redeemer via the Corcovado Train, official vans, or a challenging hiking trail. The train journey through Tijuca National Park is a scenic highlight. The statue has undergone several renovations, including a major project in 2010 and the consecration of a chapel at its base in 2006. Christ the Redeemer was declared one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007 and remains a must-see destination in Rio de Janeiro.
