Discover more about Callwood Rum Distillery

Callwood Rum Distillery, nestled in Cane Garden Bay on Tortola, is a living testament to the British Virgin Islands' rich history of rum production. As the oldest continuously operating pot distillery in the Eastern Caribbean, it offers a unique glimpse into traditional rum-making processes that have been preserved for centuries. The distillery's story dates back to the late 1800s when a buccaneer named Richard Callwood acquired the Arundel Estate for his son, Richard Jr. The estate already had sugar cane fields and a rum distillery. Today, four generations later, the Callwood family continues to produce rum using much of the same vintage equipment and methods. Visitors can witness the rum-making process firsthand, from the original boiler heating the cane juice to the aging of the rum in oak casks and copper pots. The distillery produces about 25 gallons of rum a day, using pure cane juice from sugarcane grown right behind the distillery. The air is filled with the sweet aroma of rum being made, a blend of sugarcane, woodsmoke, and molasses. A visit to Callwood Rum Distillery is more than just a tasting; it's an immersion into the BVI's cultural heritage. The distillery is open Monday through Saturday, and tours are available.
