Discover more about Sage Mountain National Park

Sage Mountain National Park, established in 1964, holds the distinction of being the first national park in the British Virgin Islands. This 92-acre park encompasses the highest peak in the Virgin Islands, rising to 1,716 feet (523 meters), offering panoramic views of the surrounding islands and the Caribbean Sea. Originally farmland, the area was generously donated by Laurance Rockefeller and reforested with white cedar, West Indian, and Honduran mahogany trees. Today, the park boasts a thriving semi-rainforest ecosystem with diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can explore the park's network of trails, including the Central Trail (Rainforest Trail), North Trail, South Trail, and the Mahogany Forest Trail. The Joseph Reynold O'Neal Trail leads to the mountain's peak. The varying elevations and exposure create diverse microclimates, with lush moist forests on the northern side and drier tropical forests on the south. Sage Mountain's trails offer moderate hiking opportunities with rewarding views. Birdwatchers will find the park particularly appealing, as it is home to various endemic and migratory species.
