Great Dog Island, one of the five uninhabited Dog Islands in the British Virgin Islands, is a haven of tranquility and natural beauty. Situated approximately 6 miles northeast of Tortola and 2.5 miles northwest of Virgin Gorda, this secluded islet offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of more frequented tourist spots.The island's name has an interesting origin. Sailors mooring near the island mistook the barking sounds of Caribbean monk seals for dogs. Sadly, these seals, once a plentiful source of fresh meat for sailors, are now extinct.Today, Great Dog Island is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life, making it a prime destination for snorkeling and diving. Popular dive sites include The Chimney and Coral Gardens/Airplane Wreck, where divers can explore coral formations and the remains of a deliberately sunken Air BVI aircraft. Hiking trails offer stunning views and opportunities to spot local wildlife. The island provides habitats for the crested anole, the Virgin Islands coqui, and the big-scaled least gecko.Whether you're seeking underwater adventures, peaceful relaxation, or a connection with nature, Great Dog Island promises an unforgettable experience.

To reach Great Dog Island, the most common approach is by boat. Several options exist depending on your starting point: * **From Virgin Gorda:** Charter a boat or take a ferry from Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour or Spanish Town to Great Dog Island.
