Discover more about Peter Island

Peter Island, a 1,779-acre private island in the British Virgin Islands, presents an idyllic retreat characterized by its peaceful atmosphere, unspoiled natural beauty, and luxurious amenities. Located approximately five miles southwest of Road Town, Tortola, it stands as the fifth largest of the BVI's islands, quays, and exposed reefs. The island's history dates back to the early 17th century when the Dutch first settled it. Pieter Adriensen, for whom the island is named, established a fort and settlement. The island later saw use by pirates, sailors, and traders traversing the Caribbean. While unsuitable for sugarcane, cotton planting saw moderate success in the mid-1700s.In more recent times, Peter Island has transformed into a luxury destination. In 1968, Peter Smedvig purchased most of the island and began developing a resort. After suffering hurricane damage and closing in 2017, the Peter Island Resort was reimagined and unveiled in 2024, featuring beachfront accommodations, a spa, and various activities.Today, visitors can enjoy the island's five powder-white sand beaches, including the popular Deadman's Bay, known for its soft sand and crystal-clear water. Other beaches include White Bay Beach, Honeymoon Beach, and Little Deadman's Beach, each offering a unique and tranquil experience. Guests can also explore the island's history, engage in water sports, or take a short boat ride to nearby islands like Tortola and Jost Van Dyke to immerse themselves in local culture.
