Discover more about Sage Mountain National Park

Sage Mountain National Park, cradled atop Tortola's highest peak, is a verdant jewel in the British Virgin Islands. Rising to 1,716 feet (523 meters), this 96-acre park is a haven of semi-rainforest, offering a cool, tranquil escape and panoramic vistas. Established in 1964 through a generous donation from Laurance Rockefeller, it stands as the BVI's first national park, marking the beginning of conservation efforts in the territory. Once farmland, the area was reforested with white cedar, West Indian, and Honduran mahogany trees, which now thrive alongside naturally regenerated vegetation. Today, the park boasts twelve marked trails, inviting visitors to explore its diverse ecosystems. The mountain's unique microclimate fosters plant life not found elsewhere on the island. Sage Mountain creates its own rain; warm, moist air rises from the east and south, cooling as it crosses the peak and falling as rain on the northern side. This phenomenon supports a rich variety of flora, from bullet wood and guavaberry to tree ferns and philodendrons. Fauna includes hermit crabs, the American kestrel, red-tailed hawks, mountain doves, and the pearly-eyed thrasher. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding islands from viewing platforms near the parking lot. The main path meanders through greenery to a picnic spot, with trails like the Central, North, and Mahogany Forest Trails offering immersive experiences.
