Ferry
The most common way to reach St. John is by ferry from St. Thomas. From Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas, take a taxi to either Charlotte Amalie ($15 per person plus $3 per bag) or Red Hook ($23 per person + bags, or $17 per person + bags if 2+ people). Ferries from Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay cost $12 per person and take about 45 minutes. Ferries from Red Hook to Cruz Bay cost $8.15 for non-residents, $6 for residents and take about 20 minutes, running hourly. Luggage is typically $3 per bag. Car ferry service is also available from Red Hook to Cruz Bay, with rates between $50-$65.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available on St. John, especially in Cruz Bay, to reach various destinations. Rates are per person and per destination, not metered. For example, from Cruz Bay to Trunk Bay, expect to pay around $8-$9 per person. To Cinnamon Bay, the rate is about $9 per person, and to Maho Bay, approximately $18 per person. Additional charges may apply for luggage ($3 per bag) and travel between midnight and 6:00 am ($3 per person). Negotiate the fare with the driver before starting your trip.
Car Rental
Renting a car, particularly a Jeep, is a popular option for exploring St. John. Several car rental agencies are located in Cruz Bay. Expect to pay around $76-$84 per day for a Jeep. Parking in Cruz Bay can be challenging, especially during peak season. Paid parking lots are available, such as L&L Parking Lot near the police station, Lumberyard Parking Lot, and Slim Man's Parking Lot. Rates vary, but expect to pay around $15 for 3 hours or $25 for the day. Free parking is limited but can be found at the National Park Visitor Center and Mongoose Junction (for customers).
