Discover more about Virgin Gorda Peak

Gorda Peak National Park, established in 1974, encompasses 260 acres of protected land, offering a unique blend of hiking and panoramic vistas. As the highest point on Virgin Gorda, reaching 1,370 feet, the peak provides unparalleled 360-degree views of the surrounding islands, including Anegada, Tortola, and St. John on a clear day. The park is a haven for nature enthusiasts, showcasing one of the last remaining examples of Caribbean dry forests in the region. This makes it a crucial area for international conservation efforts. The varying vegetation types change with elevation, creating a diverse and fascinating landscape to explore. Keep an eye out for the endemic Virgin Gorda gecko, one of the world's smallest lizards, camouflaged among the flora. Birdwatchers can also spot Antillean Crested Hummingbirds and zebra butterflies. Two main trails lead to the summit, each offering a different hiking experience. The longer trail gradually inclines, taking approximately 45-50 minutes to reach the peak, while the shorter, steeper trail offers a more moderate 25-minute ascent. Though a fire tower once stood at the summit, it collapsed due to Hurricane Irma. However, a large boulder with a ladder provides an alternative vantage point. Picnic tables are available along the trails, inviting visitors to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.
