Discover more about BVI Art Reef

The BVI Art Reef is a unique and captivating underwater attraction located off the coast of Virgin Gorda, near Spanish Town. This artificial reef combines art, history, and marine conservation, offering divers and snorkelers an unforgettable experience. The centerpiece of the Art Reef is the Kodiak Queen, a former US Navy fuel barge (YO-44) that remarkably survived the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. In 2017, after decades of service and later use as a fishing trawler, the ship was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef. Before its submersion, the Kodiak Queen was transformed by artists who added a colossal 24-meter-long steel kraken sculpture. This impressive artwork, made of rebar and steel mesh, not only enhances the visual appeal of the site but also provides a habitat for marine life. The BVI Art Reef serves as a living laboratory, attracting a diverse array of sea creatures, including corals, sea sponges, sharks, and turtles. The site is designed to promote coral growth and support vulnerable marine species, making it a valuable resource for scientists and local students. Divers and snorkelers can explore the wreck and its surrounding marine life, witnessing the fusion of art and nature beneath the waves. The BVI Art Reef project is the result of collaboration between entrepreneurs, artists, engineers, conservationists, and the local community. It exemplifies how innovative approaches can address environmental challenges and promote ocean conservation.
