Discover more about Callwood Rum Distillery

Nestled in Cane Garden Bay, the Callwood Rum Distillery stands as a living testament to the British Virgin Islands' rich history of rum production. Once home to over 100 distilleries, Tortola now boasts only Callwood, a family-run operation since the late 1800s. A buccaneer named Richard Callwood purchased the Arundel Estate for his son, Richard Jr., which included a sugarcane plantation and distillery. The distillery has been passed down through four generations of Callwood's. Visitors can witness the traditional rum-making process, which has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The distillery still uses its original stone building and a charcoal-powered boiler to transform sugarcane juice into molasses, which is then fermented into rum. The air is thick with the sweet aroma of rum and the history of the island. Tours are available, offering samples of their clear white rum to their darkest bottle, aged for 10 years in oak casks. A visit to Callwood is more than just a tasting; it's an immersion into the cultural heritage of the BVI.
