Discover more about Sage Mountain National Park

Sage Mountain National Park, established in 1964, holds the distinction of being the first national park in the British Virgin Islands. This 96-acre park protects the highest peak on Tortola, rising to 1,716 feet (523 meters), which is also the highest point in all of the Virgin Islands. The park's creation was made possible through a generous donation from Laurance Rockefeller, who purchased the land from farmers and gifted it to the BVI government for conservation. Once farmland, the area was reforested with white cedar, West Indian, and Honduran mahogany trees, which now thrive alongside naturally regenerated secondary vegetation. Today, the park offers a network of trails that wind through diverse ecosystems, from dry forests to moist rainforest areas. Hikers can explore fourteen trails, including the Mahogany Forest Trail, named after Joseph Reynold O'Neal, the founder and first Chairman of the National Parks Trust. The mountain's elevation creates a unique climate, with moist trade winds generating rainfall primarily on the northern side of the park, supporting lush forest species. This contrasts with the southern side, which retains characteristics of old pastures and dry tropical forests. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding islands, including Jost Van Dyke, Sandy Cay, and St. Thomas, from various points within the park. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife, including various bird species and lizards.
