Scrub Island, a jewel in the British Virgin Islands, is a 230-acre private island offering an exclusive escape. Located just 1.5 miles northeast of Tortola, it combines luxury with unspoiled natural beauty. The island's history stretches back 5,000 years, with evidence of Arawak and Ciboney settlements. Christopher Columbus discovered it in 1493, and later, pirates used it as a haven, supposedly giving the island its name by scrubbing their ships here.The island is divided into Big Scrub, home to the Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, and Little Scrub, a quieter, undeveloped area. Formed by volcanic activity, the terrain is rugged, with panoramic views from its peaks. Three beaches offer soft white sand and clear waters: North Beach, perfect for families; Pavilion Beach, known for snorkeling; and Honeymoon Beach, accessible only by kayak.The Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, provides luxurious accommodations, fine dining, and a full-service marina. Activities include snorkeling, diving, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Hiking trails offer scenic viewpoints, and the Ixora Spa provides relaxation. Getting There
Ferry
The primary access to Scrub Island is via a complimentary ferry from Trellis Bay Dock on Beef Island, Tortola. Upon arrival at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) on Beef Island, a Scrub Island representative will escort you to the nearby Trellis Bay Ferry Dock. The ferry operates frequently, approximately every 45 minutes, from 6:45 am to 10:30 pm, with return trips from 6:30 am to 10:15 pm. The ferry ride is about 10 minutes. This service is complimentary for guests of Scrub Island Resort.
Water Taxi
Alternatively, you can take a water taxi from various points in Tortola or nearby islands. Several companies, including Island Time Water Taxi, Last Mile Water Taxi and Dolphin Water Taxi, offer services to Scrub Island. Costs vary depending on the origin and the number of passengers, but expect to pay around $75-$150 for a private water taxi from Road Town, Tortola. Water taxis offer more flexibility in terms of timing but are a more expensive option than the ferry.
