Whelk Point Fort: A Glimpse into Tortola's Past

Whelk Point Fort, situated on the southeastern coast of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, is a historical site that echoes the island's colonial past. Constructed by the British during the American War of Independence, the fort's primary purpose was to protect the narrow passage into Paraquita Bay, a significant natural harbor. Strategically positioned, Whelk Point Fort, along with Fort Shirley, formed a defensive line around the settlement of Hodge's Creek. The fort never saw battle under British command. Over time, it fell into disrepair. In 1966, the property was acquired, and a house was built adjacent to the fort. In 1992, a new house was erected over the original foundations. Today, visitors to Whelk Point Fort can explore the remaining structures and take in the stunning views of the turquoise waters and lush landscapes.
