Caneel Bay Beach: A Tranquil Escape in Virgin Islands National Park

Caneel Bay Beach, located on St. John within the Virgin Islands National Park, offers visitors a serene escape with its soft, white sand and calm, shallow waters. The beach is once again accessible to the public after being closed for some time following hurricane damage to the Caneel Bay Resort. Caneel Bay's history is rich, with the area once being the site of the Durloo Sugar Plantation. Visitors can view the remnants of the plantation, offering a glimpse into St. John's past. The Caneel Bay Resort was established in 1956 by Laurance Rockefeller, who sought to create a harmonious balance between luxury and the natural environment. The resort was lost to Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. In April 2024, the Federal Government became the new owner of the Caneel Bay Resort lands and improvements. Caneel Bay Beach officially reopened to the public on August 1, 2024. The beach is known for its excellent snorkeling opportunities, with sightings of eagle rays, sea turtles, and various tropical fish. The bay's tranquil waters are perfect for swimming and paddleboarding. While visiting, be aware that the adjacent Caneel Bay dock is closed to the public. Also, there is no access to Caneel Bay Beach via trails or foot traffic from Honeymoon Beach. Honeymoon Beach is accessible via the Lind Point Trail, by shuttle from the Caneel Bay entrance, or by boat.
