Discover more about Old Lapau

The Old Lapau, located on Jalan James Pearce, stands as a testament to Brunei's rich royal heritage. Constructed in 1950, it replaced the Lapau Kajang as the primary venue for royal ceremonies and national gatherings. The building witnessed pivotal moments in Brunei's history, including the coronation of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III in 1951 and the signing of the Brunei Constitution in 1959. Prior to the construction of the current Lapau in 1968, the Old Lapau was a prominent landmark in Bandar Seri Begawan. It also functioned as a court, a place of worship, and a meeting place for the Legislative Council. In 1987, the Brunei History Centre (PSB) was built adjacent to it. Since September 2018, the building has been repurposed to house the 1959 Brunei Constitution Gallery, a museum showcasing visual information about the constitution. The Old Lapau is a one-story, rectangular concrete structure, resembling an elongated bungalow. Its architecture was considered contemporary for its time, as concrete structures were rare in the city. The building's exterior remains white, maintaining its original appearance. Inside, visitors can see the aged fans and chandeliers, as well as a large U-shaped table and leather seats used in past gatherings.
