Discover more about Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque stands as a testament to Brunei's affluence and devotion to Islam. Inaugurated in 1994, the mosque was built to honor Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's Silver Jubilee. The mosque's design was inspired by Turkish mosques, featuring four towering minarets and stunning golden domes. The mosque can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers in its air-conditioned interiors. The main prayer hall boasts a gold-plated chandelier crafted from Austrian strass crystal glass, Italian marble, and Philippine hardwood. Verses from the Quran adorn the walls, showcasing intricate carvings and geometric patterns. The mosque also includes a library, museum, conference room and cafe. The exterior is equally captivating, with lush gardens, serene fountains, and a large pond surrounding the mosque. The 29 golden domes commemorate the 29th Bruneian Sultan, while the marble stairs, with 29 steps, honor the current Sultan. Five water fountains symbolize both the five daily prayers and the five pillars of Islam. The mosque is particularly stunning at sunset, when the golden domes glisten in the fading light. Visitors are welcome to explore the mosque outside of prayer times, but must adhere to a strict dress code. Modest attire is required, and robes are provided for those who are not appropriately dressed. Photography is typically not allowed inside the mosque.
