Taman Arkeologi Kota Batu, located approximately 5 kilometers from Bandar Seri Begawan, marks the site of Brunei's ancient capital, dating back to the 14th to 17th centuries. This archaeological park offers a captivating journey into the Bruneian Empire's past, revealing its role as a significant center for trade, government, and settlement. The park spans 120 acres and is divided into three main zones: the hill zone, the flatland zone, and the riverbank zone. Visitors can explore the remnants of stone and timber constructions, as well as various artifacts, including Chinese porcelain dating back to the Song Dynasty, ceramics from Siam, Indo-China and Brunei. These discoveries highlight Brunei's historical significance as a major Borneo-northwest commerce center. Key features of the park include Kota Batu I Complex, which contains a square stone structure believed to have accommodated five aristocrats, and Kota Batu II, which may have been a Chinese cemetery or a stone fort. The park also features a 1,580-meter walkway, rest huts, and a bridge connecting to Terindak Island. The park is also home to the mausoleums of Sultan Sharif Ali and Sultan Bolkiah, the third and fifth Sultans of Brunei respectively. These tombs offer a glimpse into the lives and legacies of these important figures in Bruneian history.
