Getting There

  • Walking

    Istana Darussalam is located in Kampong Sumbiling Lama, a short distance from the center of Bandar Seri Begawan. From the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, walk east along Jalan McArthur, then turn right onto Jalan Masjid Omar Ali Saifuddien. Continue onto Jalan Kumbang Pasang, then turn right onto Jalan Darussalam. The palace will be on your left. The walk is approximately 15-20 minutes.

    From the main bus terminal in Jalan Cator, take a bus that services the Sumbiling Lama area. Bus routes 01 (Circle Line) and 20 (Business Centres Line) are possibilities. Ask the driver to drop you off near Jalan Darussalam. From there, it is a short walk to the palace. Bus fare is approximately BND 1.

  • Taxi

Constructed in 1947, the palace exemplifies indigenous Malay architecture, initially built with wood and later reinforced with concrete.Though the royal family moved to Istana Darul Hana in 1951, Istana Darussalam remains a significant site in Brunei's history. Important events, such as the birth of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in 1946, took place here. The palace is now under the protection of the Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act.Visitors can appreciate the palace's exterior, characterized by its green and brown structure that stands out against the surrounding village homes. Although interior access is restricted, the palace and its grounds offer a tranquil setting for reflection on Brunei's rich history and cultural traditions.
