Istana Nurul Iman, meaning 'Palace of the Light of Faith', is the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and the seat of the Brunei government. Located on the banks of the Brunei River, a few kilometers southwest of Bandar Seri Begawan, the palace was completed in 1984, just in time for Brunei's independence from Britain. Commissioned in 1981 by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the palace was designed by Filipino architect Leandro V. Locsin, with the interior designed by Khuan Chew. The palace blends Islamic aesthetics, traditional Malay architecture, and European luxury. The palace boasts 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, 18 elevators, and 44 marble staircases. It also includes a banquet hall that can accommodate up to 5,000 guests and a prayer hall for 1,500 people. Other features include five swimming pools, a helipad, and a garage with space for over 100 cars. Istana Nurul Iman is not open to the public except during the annual Islamic celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, also known as Eid al-Fitr. During this time, the Sultan opens the palace to visitors. Outside of Hari Raya, visitors can view the palace from a distance or take a Brunei River tour.
