Discover more about Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

The Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, also known as the Kiarong Mosque, is a magnificent testament to Brunei's Islamic heritage and the vision of its current Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah. Built in 1992 and officially opened in 1994 to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's reign, this grand mosque is the largest in Brunei and one of its most iconic landmarks. The mosque's design is a blend of Islamic and modern architectural styles, influenced by Turkish mosques. Its most striking feature is the 29 golden domes, each representing the 29th Sultan of Brunei. Four towering minarets, standing at 58 meters (190 ft) high, frame the structure, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. The mosque is adorned with intricate mosaics, marble staircases, and five water fountains symbolizing the five daily prayers and the five pillars of Islam. The interior is equally lavish, featuring air-conditioned halls that can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers. Materials from around the world, including Persian carpets, Italian marble, and Philippine hardwood, contribute to the opulent atmosphere. The main prayer hall boasts a gold-plated chandelier crafted from Austrian strass crystal glass beneath its ornate dome. The Mihrab (niche in the wall that indicates the direction of Mecca) is decorated with 24-carat gold-plated tiles and black marble stones. Visitors are welcome to explore the mosque outside of prayer times, but modest dress is required; robes are provided for those who need them. The mosque is particularly stunning at sunset when the golden domes reflect the warm light, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
