4.6

Pobitite Kamuni, meaning "planted stones," is a remarkable natural landmark in Bulgaria, often called the Stone Forest. Located in the western part of the Varna lowland, it features cylindrical stone columns rising from a desert-like landscape. These porous columns, reaching heights of 5 to 12 meters, are composed of limy sandstones containing numerous fossils. The origin of these formations has been a subject of scientific debate, with theories ranging from coral activity to prismatic weathering and the formation of limestone concretions. One prevailing hypothesis suggests they formed around rising methane-bearing fluid plumes. Regardless of their exact origin, the Stone Forest presents a captivating sight, evoking images of a ruined temple or an alien landscape. Legends also surround Pobitite Kamuni, with tales of giants, rebels, and a young man who betrayed God's name, leading to the petrification of the stones. Today, Pobitite Kamuni is a protected natural landmark, attracting visitors with its unique geological features and serene atmosphere. It is considered the only naturally formed desert in Eastern Europe.
