The Stella Maris Chapel, located within the Balchik Palace complex, is a serene and historically significant site. The chapel was constructed under the direction of Queen Marie of Romania, who was captivated by Balchik's coastal beauty in the early 20th century. The chapel's architecture is inspired by old Cypriot churches, reflecting Queen Marie's eclectic tastes and spiritual beliefs. Queen Marie's vision for the Balchik Palace, also known as 'The Quiet Nest' (Tenha Yuva), was a peaceful retreat that combined various architectural and garden styles. The Stella Maris Chapel became an integral part of this vision, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a sanctuary. Following her death in 1938, Queen Marie's heart was placed in a golden casket and temporarily interred in the Stella Maris Chapel, underscoring its importance to her. Today, visitors can explore the chapel and admire its religious artwork, including scenes from the Old and New Testaments, as well as the faces of Queen Marie and Princess Ileana, who supported the chapel's construction.
