Check the bus schedules as they may vary. After approximately 20 minutes, disembark at the 'Ситан Кале' stop. From there, it is a short 5-minute walk northwest to the fortress. Keep an eye out for signs directing you to the historical site. A single bus fare should cost around 1-2 BGN.

    For those who prefer to walk, start from the town center near the Bansko fountain. Head north on 'Ulitsa Pirin', continue straight until you reach 'Ulitsa Glazne', and then follow the same path as you would by car. This walk will take approximately 30 minutes and offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains. Upon reaching the fork in the road, take the right road towards 'Ситан Кале', which will lead you directly to the fortress. There are no costs associated with walking.

  • Car

    If you are driving from central Bansko, head north on 'Ulitsa Pirin' towards 'Ulitsa Yavor'. After about 1 kilometer, turn left onto 'Ulitsa Glazne'. Continue straight for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the fork in the road. At the fork, take the right road, which is marked towards 'Ситан Кале'. Drive for another 2 kilometers, and you will find Ситан Кале on your left, easily recognizable by its historical structure. Parking is free. There are no tolls.

Ситан Кале (Sitan Kale), also known as the Citadel of Kale, is an ancient fortress located a few kilometers from Bansko, Bulgaria. This historical site offers visitors a chance to step back in time and explore the remnants of Bulgaria’s past. Perched on a hill, the fortress provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. Archaeological excavations reveal a citadel with 2-meter-thick walls made of rubble bound by mortar. Defensive towers were constructed at the corners, each with a unique design. These ruins have been restored and adapted for visitors, offering insight into the fortress's former strength and grandeur. Various archaeological finds, including fragments of household ceramics, weapons, coins, and a gate key to the watchtower, indicate active habitation from antiquity to the late Middle Ages. According to the Bulgarian History website, the remains of the fortress are the largest and most strategically important along the Mesta River. The fortress was home to the ruler, his family, guards, and a large garrison. Over time, many houses and settlers from other regions appeared around the fortress, seeking protection and livelihood.
