Ситан Кале (Sitan Kale), also known as the Citadel of Kale, is an ancient fortress located a few kilometers from Bansko, Bulgaria. This historical site offers visitors a chance to step back in time and explore the remnants of Bulgaria’s past. Perched on a hill, the fortress provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts.Archaeological excavations reveal a citadel with 2-meter-thick walls made of rubble bound by mortar. Defensive towers were constructed at the corners, each with a unique design. These ruins have been restored and adapted for visitors, offering insight into the fortress's former strength and grandeur. Various archaeological finds, including fragments of household ceramics, weapons, coins, and a gate key to the watchtower, indicate active habitation from antiquity to the late Middle Ages.According to the Bulgarian History website, the remains of the fortress are the largest and most strategically important along the Mesta River. The fortress was home to the ruler, his family, guards, and a large garrison. Over time, many houses and settlers from other regions appeared around the fortress, seeking protection and livelihood.
