Cape Kastrich, which dominates the landscape, was the site of a medieval fortress called Castrition. This fortress played a key role in struggles between the Byzantine and Second Bulgarian Empires for control of the Black Sea region. The fortress, dating back to late antiquity, was first mentioned in historical sources in 1263. Today, the remains of the fortress walls, forming a rectangle of approximately 20 by 30 meters, are still believed to be found in the area. Note that Kastrich Bay lies in a protected area called “Silistar”. This entire area from Silistar Beach to Rezovo is protected and recognized as one of the most important wetlands for waterfowl conservation.
