Discover more about Baba Vida Fortress

Baba Vida Fortress, also known as Babini Vidini Kuli, is situated on the bank of the Danube River in the northern part of Vidin. Constructed in the 10th century on the site of the Roman fortress Bononia, it is considered Bulgaria's only fully preserved medieval fortress. Over the centuries, it has served as a defensive structure, a royal residence, and even a prison. The fortress has an irregular quadrilateral shape, with each side measuring approximately 70 meters. It features two curtain walls and nine towers, offering panoramic views of the Danube River and the city. A moat, once filled with water from the Danube, surrounds the fortress, adding to its imposing presence.Inside, visitors can explore the towers, the former prison (now a museum), and a courtyard where residential buildings once stood. Exhibits showcase artifacts and offer insights into the fortress's history. The site has also been used as a filming location for over 50 movies and hosts summer theater performances. According to legend, the fortress is named after Vida, the eldest of three sisters, who chose to remain single and build the castle rather than marry unhappily. Baba Vida is a monument of culture with national significance.
