Discover more about Boyana Church

The Boyana Church, located in the Boyana district at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church that stands as a testament to the country's rich artistic and cultural heritage. Added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, the church complex comprises three buildings, each constructed in different periods, reflecting distinct architectural styles and artistic influences. The oldest section, the eastern church, dates back to the late 10th to early 11th centuries. This small, cross-vaulted structure features a single apse and inbuilt cruciform supports. In the mid-13th century, Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava commissioned the second section, a two-story tomb-church. The final addition came in the mid-19th century when the local community funded the construction of the western section. The church's fame rests primarily on its stunning frescoes from 1259. Painted over earlier layers, these frescoes represent one of the most complete and well-preserved examples of medieval art in the Balkans. The frescoes depict 89 scenes with 240 human images, displaying remarkable individuality, psychological insight, and vitality. The unknown artists, possibly trained in the Turnovo Art School, followed the canon of icon-painting while incorporating elements of contemporary life, resulting in a unique and expressive style. The donor's inscription in the narthex indicates the year of completion, the names of the donors, and their relation to Bulgarian and Serbian royalty.Visitors can admire the grand image of Christ Pantokrator in the apse, along with scenes from the life of Christ and depictions of various saints. The portraits of Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava, as well as Tsar Constantine Asen Tikh and Tsaritsa Irina, are among the oldest surviving portraits of Bulgarian historical figures. The church is located in a park, where visitors can see a giant redwood tree planted in 1907 by King Ferdinand.
