Driving
The Rila Monastery is located approximately 120 km south of Sofia. Take the A3 highway towards Kulata, then follow the signs to Rila Monastery after the town of Kocherinovo. The drive takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. There is a parking lot available near the main entrance for 5 BGN per day. Parking on the side of the road before the parking lot is free.
Shuttle Bus
A convenient way to reach Rila Monastery from Sofia is by shuttle bus. Several companies offer daily shuttles from Sofia city center, with prices starting from 30 BGN (approximately €15) per person for a one-way trip. The shuttle typically departs from St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral around 9:00 AM and requires advance booking. Some shuttles also offer a combined tour with Boyana Church for around 35 EUR.
Public Transport
While a direct public bus from Sofia to Rila Monastery was previously available, it is currently not operating. As of July 2025, the most reliable option via public transport involves taking a bus from Sofia to either Dupnitsa or Blagoevgrad, then connecting to Rila Monastery. Check local bus schedules for updated information. FlixBus also offers services to Rila Monastery from Sofia, with prices starting from €18.02. From the bus stop, it's a short walk to the monastery entrance.
