Discover more about Holy Trinity Church

Located in the heart of Bansko, the Holy Trinity Church is one of the town's most significant landmarks. Its construction, initiated in 1833 by local builders and the prominent trader Lazar German, reflects the spirit and determination of the people of Bansko during a period of Bulgarian National Revival. The church is a three-nave pseudo-basilica, notable for its impressive size. It measures 44 meters in length, 24 meters in width, and 20 meters in height. The design cleverly creates the illusion of a smaller structure, a necessity during Ottoman rule which restricted the size of Christian places of worship. The thick stone walls, reaching 1.10 meters at the base, and the roof supported by 12 wooden columns, add to its architectural grandeur. The interior is adorned with unique frescoes and intricate wood carvings. The ceiling, painted by Velyan Ognev from the Debar Art School, depicts a starry sky with angels. The iconostasis and decorative elements are the work of Master Ognyan Velev, while the icons were created by Dimitar and Simeon Molerovi, founders of the Bansko Art School. The bell tower, added in 1850 under the guidance of master Gligor Doyuv, is a prominent feature, housing four bells donated by the Veleganovi brothers. Visitors can also observe a blend of Christian and Turkish symbols, including a cross and half-moons near the main entrance, reflecting the complex history of the region. The churchyard, enclosed by a high stone wall, provides a serene space for reflection.
